One of My Sites Gets Over 5000
Page Views a Month
...Because of "Unintended SEO"
Here’s an amazing statistic:
Our retail site, CactusCanyon.com had over 5000 visitors last month from people who used a single unique keyword. Google Analytics shows me all the keywords which were used in search engines to find our site. It also shows how many times each keyword was used. There were over 5000 keywords that were only used ONCE!
I did not optimize for any of these 5000 keywords. For the most part they were longer tail and many were somewhat odd. They were phrases about our products and niche that I never would have considered optimizing for in the first place. The search engines showed our pages for these unique keywords because somewhere in the content I accidentally had the same or close phrase that the searcher typed in.
Sure, some of that traffic is not too targeted, but much of it is.
The moral of this post is that if your site has a lot of content, you will get that extra traffic just by default; you don’t even have to work for it.
We only have about 100 pages on the site. Now I am kicking myself for not being disciplined enough to create a page a day over the past 4 years. It would have taken me maybe 20 minutes a day.
Hmmm, 5000 extra page views because I have 100 pages of content….4 years times a page a day and the site could have had 1500 pages by now…15 times 5000….wow, you do the math!
Are you going to get busy writing content now?
But don't just write content for the 1 shot keywords. You want to SEO all your content correctly for the popular keywords you want traffic for.
SEO was the main thing that got my business off the ground. Without it, I'm afraid I'd still be working at my old job.
