What About SEO and Meta-Tags?
Here might be the understatement of the week:
Internet marketing beginners face a fairly steep learning curve.
Anyone who gives online marketing more than a token effort understands there is a LOT to learn. The Internet itself is a great place to learn; there are countless sites, forums, and blogs (like this one) which offer all kinds of free and quality information.
However, the free content often turns into a double edged sword. Sure, much of the information is relevant and helpful. But there is also plenty of “helpful information” that is just plain wrong.
A perfect case in point is the keywords meta tag.
Rarely a week goes by that I don’t hear something like this from a beginner:
“Hi Steve, I don’t understand why my site is not ranking well. I have added all my keywords in the meta tag area. What could be wrong?”
Folks! Meta tag keywords do not matter AT ALL with Google now days. Google uses over 200 signals to rank a page and the meta tag keywords are not on that list! Yahoo is not saying, but most SEO experts agree they don’t matter there either.
So should you include them at all in your code? Sure, you can add them. There may be, and probably are some 3rd tier search engines that may still use them. But remember that the top 3 search engines account for over 95% of all search traffic.
